Chiropractic Care For Headaches

Headache is probably the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed health problem- so much so, that migraine alone costs the US between $5.6 and $17.2 billion in lost work productivity. Sadly, about half of this population is completely dependent on medications even when headache pain can be alleviated without drugs.

Headache treatment begins with identifying the cause. Typically, headache occurs for more reasons than one.

Types of Headache

Tension Headache: This is the most common of all, accounting for about 75% of all headaches. It is often described as a dull and achy feeling either on one or both sides of the head followed by a dull pain around the eyes. While most tension headaches last for around an hour, chronic conditions can last for weeks and months. Stress is a major factor that causes tension headaches. Injuries to the neck through a whiplash and bad posture causing stress to muscles and spine also cause headaches.

Migraines: Migraines are listed among the top 20 of the world’s recognized disorders, says the WHO. They are marked by throbbing pain that can last for several hours and sometimes even for few days at a time. The sufferer is often sensitive to light and sound or feel nauseous.

Cluster Headaches: Cluster headache usually refers to pain on one side of the head and recurs for about 4-5 times in a day.

Chiropractic Treatment For Headache:

Unlike conventional treatment, chiropractic care tackles the underlying cause for the headache rather than merely addressing the symptom. Treatment begins by analyzing the root cause. The chiropractor studies your case history and enquires about the precise incidents that increase or create the headache. He may also check your nerve function by assessing reflexes and muscle strength. Sometimes, an x-ray may also be prescribed to test ligament strength.

Based on the evaluation, the Chiropractor may suggest minor therapy such as trigger point stimulation, or attempt to correct your posture through exercises or suggest massage therapy. Massage is ideal for tension headaches and to relax the neck, shoulders and upper back.
